It’s a big day at Westminster Abbey, folks! December 6 marked Kate Middleton’s fourth annual Christmas carol service, and the Prince and Princess of Wales were joined by their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, marking their first public appearance in six months (!). Notably absent from the event, however: Kate’s in-laws, King Charles and Queen Camilla.

No official statement was given regarding their absence, so fans and experts can only speculate on why the pair decided to skip Kate’s holiday event. One possible theory, according to People: King Charles didn’t want to steal the spotlight by attending, since the service is Kate’s passion project.

Let’s also not forget that Queen Camilla is still recovering from her recent bout of pneumonia. She’s already had to cancel several events over the past month, finally confirming that she’d contracted pneumonia during a state visit by the Emir of Qatar on December 3. A reasonable excuse for missing the service, IMO.

But some find King Charles and Queen Camilla’s absence from the event a bit sus, especially since it was revealed just last week that Kate and her mother-in-law have a “tense relationship,” per insiders.

A source for Us Weekly even claimed Queen Camilla is hesitant to pass her royal duties on to Kate due to the strain in their relationship. “She loves her responsibilities,” the source said of the Queen. “Her whole life, she has always wanted to be queen, so she doesn’t want to let it go so fast.”

Though King Charles and Queen Camilla attended Kate’s 2022 carol service (which was dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth), they snubbed the event last year due to a prior obligation. Instead, the King attended what the palace described as a “Celebration of Craft” Reception, hosted by his charity The King’s Foundation at his Highgrove estate. Veeeery interesting.
