Taylor Swift just broke streaming record with ‘Life of a Showgirl’

As if Taylor Swift needed more polish for her decorated résumé, the Showgirl has made her sequined mark in the music history books once more.Swift, who released her 12th studio album “The Life of a Showgirl” on Oct. 3, has broken the modern-era record for the most albums sold in a week in the United States, according to Billboard, citing figures from entertainment data tracking firm Luminate.While final numbers for the album’s first-week sales, which include equivalent album units (pure sales, streams and track sales), are still being calculated, Billboard and Luminate report that “The Life of a Showgirl” has already sold more than 3.4 million units in pure album sales. The whopping figure, the largest sales week for an album since Luminate began recording data in 1991, includes both physical and digital purchases of the album.

Swift’s achievement surpasses the previous record holder, British pop titan Adele, who in 2015 sold 3.378 million copies of her album “25” in its first week of release.As for “The Life of a Showgirl,” total first-week consumption and pure album sales figures are expected to be finalized and announced on Sunday, Swift’s “Showgirl,” a playful soft-rock record, serves as a follow-up to 2024’s “The Tortured Poets Department,” an album that peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for 17 weeks and earned the pop superstar Grammy nominations for album of the year, best pop vocal album, song and record of the year (“Fortnight”) and best music video (“Fortnight”).Swift also broke records with “Tortured Poets.” The 31-track double album became the first album in Spotify history to garner over 300 million streams in a single day, earning Swift the title of Spotify’s all-time most streamed artist in a single day.The singer’s “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” came in at No. 1 at the North American box office the weekend of Oct. 3 with $33 million, according to estimates from Comscore. It was an impressive haul for what is less a traditional feature film and more a way for fans to listen to Swift’s latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl”, in a movie theater.The feat means Swift had both a No. 1 album and No. 1 movie during the same weekend, which not even pop icon Prince accomplished with the release of “Purple Rain” in 1984, Deadline noted.”The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” featured the debut of the music video for Swift’s song “The Fate of Ophelia”, which was later released on YouTube, as well as lyric videos for the entire album, behind-the-scenes footage and introductions from Swift explaining her intentions behind the songs.
