Patrick Mahomes expressed frustration with officials after the Chiefs’ 28-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills as Kansas City fell to 5-4 and outside the AFC playoff picture for the first time since 2018.
Mahomes completed 15 of 34 passes for 250 yards with one interception and no touchdowns, marking his first sub-50% completion game in nine NFL seasons with a 44.1% average. And his lone interception came late, on third-and-11 from the Chiefs’ 23. Under pressure, when the quarterback’s pass was caught by Maxwell Hairston, ending a crucial drive.Mahomes’ frustration grew on a drive starting at their own 11-yard line. Scrambling, his pass was tipped by Bills linebacker Michael Hoecht, yet officials flagged him for intentional grounding.
The penalty moved the Chiefs back to third-and-16 from their own 36. One play later, the 30-year-old was sacked, forcing a punt and killing the drive’s momentum as Buffalo won the ball.”I was just trying to say that it got my arm,” Mahome said post-game. “And the ball got hit.”I was trying to throw it closer to the guy down the field, but it’s a judgment call, and it’s not reviewable.
“I wasn’t going to throw it to him; I was going to burn it, but obviously they didn’t see the ball get tipped. That’s just part of the game.”Mahomes avoided direct criticism but highlighted how the call affected the team. The tipped pass, unacknowledged by officials, shifted momentum to Buffalo late in the game.
And whilst head coach Andy Reid attempted to challenge, but the call was not reviewable. Meanwhile Buffalo went on to record three sacks and 15 hits as the Bills’ Josh Allen starred on the night with 273 passing yards and a touchdown on 26 attempts.
Who do Kansas City play next? Are the Chiefs on an NFL bye in Week 10?
The loss comes at a good time for Kansas City, who will have the chance to take Week 10 off due to their NFL bye week before they reset and go again in Week 11 against the Denver Broncos on November 16 from 16:25 ET/13:25 PT.The week off will allow Andy Reid, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to figure out the cracks in their play and try to iron them out before taking on the AFC West leaders at the Empower Field in Colorado.Afterwards, they face games against the 7-2 Indianapolis Colts (November 23) and Dallas Cowboys (November 27) as they look to pick up momentum once again in the 2025/26 NFL season.
