Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers had initially expected the note to sell for just $1500 (£1200) but in the end it reached the five-digit figures by selling for $12,500 (£10,000) in the United Kingdom, after being listed in July 2024.

The note is addressed to Diana’s parent’s housekeeper, Violet Collison, and describes how the eldest son of King Charles III ‘adored’ his younger brother, who had been born just 10 days before the given date of September 25, 1984.

“William adores his little brother & spends the entire time pouring an endless supply of hugs & kisses over Harry,” Diana wrote in the note to Violet, who if affectionately dubbed Collie. “[It’s] wonderful to watch, if we’re allowed near!”

What happened to Prince Harry and William?
The letter is a far cry from the 2024 connection between the two brothers, who are second and fifth in the line of succession behind King Charles III. They have been locked in a bitter feud, publicly, since 2020 when the Duke of Sussex stepped down as a senior member of the Royal Family with Meghan Markle.

An explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey then followed, before the 40-year-old Harry released ‘Spare’ in 2023; a memoir describing his life growing up in which he revealed the two brothers had been rivals since early childhood.

They got into physical altercations and fights and the Duke of Sussex described his older sibling as his ‘nemesis’. Whilst things were tense, they broke down behind closed doors in 2017 when William advised Harry to take things slow with Markle.

Bridges now seem entirely burned. They’re not talking to each other, nor talking to the other’s wife, and William is thought to be making a significant attempt to stop Harry from ever returning to the Royal Family fold, although King Charles seems somewhat open to the idea.
