Prince Harry and Meghan Markle risk facing serious repercussions from Donald Trump after their latest move, an expert has warned
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could face serious backlash, particularly from Donald Trump, due to their recent actions, warns an expert. The couple has been under constant criticism from Mr. Trump since their dramatic decision to step down as working royals and relocate to the United States.
Recently, the Sussexes criticized Meta, the company behind social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, for its decision to eliminate its fact-checking program. In a statement on their website, Harry and Meghan called on Meta to prioritize public safety and control the increasing hate speech on its platforms.
They described the decision as “undoubtedly responding to political winds.”
PR expert Nick Ede believes this subtle reference might have been directed at Mr. Trump, who is set to be inaugurated as US president again next week, and warns that he might find it “quite incendiary”. Speaking to Newsweek, Ede said: “Unfortunately there could be a repercussion from this, especially with Trump, you know, poking this ginormous bear and not expecting something back from it. Trump will see this as a battle he wants to win and potentially will target them in whatever way he does it.”
He further added: “This is quite incendiary in that respect because we know Trump is not a fan of theirs and this could be a way to negatively affect them. I don’t think this is the last of this and I don’t think it will stop.”, reports the Mirror.
Harry and Meghan’s feud with Mr. Trump dates back to the 2020 election campaign between Mr. Trump and Joe Biden. The Sussexes appeared in a video urging Americans to ‘vote against hate speech’.
Although they didn’t name anyone specifically, their comments were seen as a reference to Mr. Trump and an endorsement of Mr. Biden. Some claimed this was a violation of the Sandringham Summit agreement, which was established when the couple stepped down from their Royal duties in 2020.
Later, Mr. Trump stated he was “no fan” of Meghan. Fast forward to recent times, Harry has been embroiled in a controversy over his visa that allows him to reside in California.
After confessing to using marijuana, cocaine, and psychedelic mushrooms in his contentious memoir Spare, a lawsuit from the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation argued that the US Government should disclose records about the Duke’s visa application to reveal whether his drug use was declared. Before a decision was made in the case, Mr. Trump criticized the Biden administration for preserving the privacy of Harry’s immigration application in order to “protect Harry.”
He told Express US: “I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.”
The tension surrounding Prince Harry’s visa status surfaced once again during an interview with Nigel Farage on GB News. President-elect Donald Trump was pressed by Mr. Farage on whether there would be any “special privileges” for the prince, to which he responded: “No. We’ll have to see if they know something about the drugs, and if he lied they’ll have to take appropriate action.”
Despite this tough stance, there seems to be a glimmer of hope that Harry may not face deportation under Trump’s administration.
Ahead of the election, Trump’s son Eric implied that the risk to Harry’s visa is low, stating “no one cares” about the prince and commenting that his wife Meghan is “pretty unpopular”.
