Sean Penn has branded Donald Trump’s decision to appoint Sylvester Stallone, Jon Voight, and Mel Gibson as Hollywood ambassadors a “clown show”

Actor Sean Penn expressed his dissatisfaction with US President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint Sylvester Stallone, Jon Voight, and Mel Gibson as Hollywood ambassadors.

The two-time Oscar winner referred to the move as a “clown show”.

The 64-year-old also took issue with the Oscars’ organizers for their lack of “backbone” in declining an opportunity to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the 2022 awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

When questioned about Trump’s trio of high-profile Hollywood ambassadors, he responded to the Oxford Union last week: “Look, clown shows can do great damage but I’m not very interested in them.”

Penn, who was previously married to singer Madonna and actresses Robin Wright and Leila George, also criticized the Academy, which is hosting this year’s Oscars ceremony next Sunday.

He condemned its refusal to allow Ukraine’s leader – a former comedian and film star – to speak at the awards, which took place just five weeks after Russia invaded his country.

“What they don’t do is have any backbone at all,” he stated.

“When I contacted them with an offer from President Zelensky to speak to the Academy, I made it clear he wasn’t going to be talking about President Biden.”

I made it clear he wasn’t going to be talking about (then former) President Trump. He represented this incredibly courageous country at large.

He’s a filmmaker and he wanted to thank everyone for their support at that time and talk about the big medicine that film can be and the value of film.”

Meanwhile, he also touched upon another infamous Oscars’ moment: “And the idea they traded that for a “bitch slap” from Will Smith to Chris Rock, serves them right.”

He is referencing last year’s highly publicized slap incident where 56-year-old Smith struck 60-year-old Rock after he made an offhand comment about Smith’s 53-year-old spouse, Jada Pinkett Smith.
