They’re not that interested in the fame and celebrity that comes with it.”
If they had it their way, neither Prince William nor Kate Middleton would choose a public life, their former royal aide said in a new interview.
Jason Knauf, who was the former chief executive of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ Royal Foundation before leaving the royal household in early 2022, spoke in a February 23 sit-down with 60 Minutes Australia, telling the program, “Neither the prince or the princess would choose to be public figures. They’re not that interested in the fame and celebrity that comes with it. In fact, not really interested at all.”
“I think that makes it quite interesting in today’s world to see people out there doing the jobs, but for the right reasons,” he added.
Before signing on as chief executive, Knauf worked as a communications secretary for William and Kate and also Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. He still stays close to the Prince and Princess of Wales, serving up to the present day as a trustee for William’s Earthshot Prize.
Speaking about his role in helping mold William and Kate’s public image, Knauf told 60 Minutes Australia on Sunday, “I don’t think anyone can control the image of anyone in today’s media world, social media world. You just can’t. All you can do is help people be themselves.”
“With both of these people, the prince and the princess, what you see is what you really get behind the scenes as well,” he continued.
It’s something that matters to the couple, married for nearly 14 years and raising three kids. Royal though they may be, William and Kate “consciously set out to achieve a sense of normality,” a source previously told People of the pair.
