Meghan Markle faces fresh scrutiny as royal staff disclose behind-the-scenes tensions about her time as a working royal. British journalist Tom Quinn reported in The London Times that Meghan Markle was allegedly nicknamed the “Duchess of Difficult” “for a while”. According to a palace staff member, her difficult behaviour stemmed from her struggle to navigate the royal household’s complex system. “She could be difficult because she was finding life difficult — trying to feel her way and work out the intricacies of a positively medieval, labyrinthine system,” the staff member told Quinn.
Brutal and bitter nicknames for the Duchess of Sussex
Markle’s issues with royal life, from 2018 to 2020, reportedly included her interactions with palace staff. Tensions grew as Meghan struggled to connect with palace staff, displaying inconsistent behaviour, she would alternate between being overly friendly and becoming irritated when staff didn’t meet her expectations. According to an insider, “one minute she would be really friendly, perhaps overfriendly, hugging staff and trying to make friends with them, and the next she would be irritated by the fact they wouldn’t respond instantly at all times of the day and night.”
Markle reportedly questioned the formal relationship between King Charles III and his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II. “She once said, ‘But they’re mother and son — why are they so completely stiff with each other?’”. Despite the unflattering nickname, some staff members also called her “Mystic Meg,” a nod to her progressive and new-age views on various issues
Meghan wanted to finish what Princess Diana started
Markle’s ambitious approach to the royal family was also a point of contention. As one former staffer recalled, she came across as overly confident in early meetings, often trying to lead discussions rather than learn from them. The source revealed, “It was extraordinary because she was so confident that you could see she wanted to run the meeting rather than learn about the royal family through the meeting”. The source added, “I think this was typical of what happened throughout her time at Kensington Palace and then Windsor. She was a great believer in grabbing the bull by the horns — except the royal family is not really a bull.”
Another staffer claimed that Meghan had a ‘messiah complex’ as she was focused on becoming the best-known member of the royal family. The duchess ‘really disliked the hierarchy’ and thought that senior royals ‘behaved like babies’. The source continued by saying, “I don’t mean that in a critical way because all her big ideas were about doing good. She once said, ‘What Diana started, I want to finish,’ and we took that to mean she wanted to become a sort of globetrotting champion of the poor and the marginalised
Despite the nicknames and allegations, not all staff disliked Meghan. A Kensington Palace communications team member found her “very straightforward and matter-of-fact”. While some traditional staffers were less supportive, others appreciated her directness. “The old guard really had it in for Meghan and, to be fair to her, she really stood up to them,” another source said.
The source added, “But, of course, if you make waves in the royal family, the senior royals will always back the courtiers, because in many cases the senior royals have been friends with the courtiers since childhood.”
