Meghan Markle Makes a Subtle 4-Word Dig at the Royal Family in New Netflix Series: “He Has Just…Read More

Meghan Markle has been riding the high after the launch of her latest Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. Unsurprisingly, in the very first episode, the Duchess of Sussex threw a sharp four-word swipe at the royal family. Her cryptic remark, made while referencing her relationship with Prince Harry, was delivered with a sly smirk.
The cheeky dig seemed to allude to her dramatic exit from the royal family. Markle and Prince Harry’s exit from the royal family gave the couple the freedom to pursue their independent ventures. The move seems to be paying off for Markle as the series is set to have a second season. With Love, Meghan, released on March 4, 2025, features the former actress hosting cooking sessions with her famous friends. In the debut episode, she invited her makeup artist, Daniel Martin, for a relaxed gathering. During the conversation, the Duchess of Sussex commented on herrelationship timeline with Harry. She said, “He has just been in my life for the before, during, and after, shall we say…”
The four words were enough for her friend to understand what she meant. According to Geo News, ‘before, during, and after’ referred to her life before meeting Harry, during her time as a working royal, and after stepping down from royal duties, while ‘shall we say’ referenced the pair’s exit from the UK. The cryptic swipe made her stance clear without directly mentioning the royal family. In the episode, Markle made Martin a jar of homemade bath salts and prepared him a tray of crudités. “Every time I come to your house I always gain 10 pounds,” said Martin in awe of her skills.
Markle’s feelings about the royal family were also evident in other subtle statements. According to the Daily Mail, standup comedian Whitney Cummings claimed that the show was about trolling King Charles and the rest of the royals back in the UK. She noted that Markle’s jam, which the Duchess calls ‘fruit spread’, competes with the King’s. “Charles makes jam. And she’s like, ‘Jam’s too sweet, it has way too much sugar. So I do preserves.’ Everything she’s doing, it is not to entertain us,” opined Cummings. Comedian and writer, Katherine Ryan, also criticized the Netflix series. She slammed, “Fine if you want to beMeghan Sussex. But then, let’s be honest about why you’re choosing that. Don’t be like ‘I had no idea who he was, I’ve never even been to Sussex’. It’s because it’s a way to hang on to the Duchess of Sussex.”
With Love, Meghan isn’t the only venture Markle has undertaken since her move across the pond. 2025 has clearly been her year, with the re-launch of her lifestyle brand, As Ever. However, that too has brought heavy criticism as Markle used her children to promote her brand on Instagram when she otherwise is firm about keeping them out of the spotlight.
