Meghan Markle Brings Homemade Cookies for Drew Barrymore’s Audience…Baked with Help from Her Kids….See More

The Duchess of Sussex also recruited her wedding dress designer to bake

Meghan Markle brought something special to the set of Drew Barrymore’s show straight from her California kitchen

The Duchess of Sussex appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show in an episode that aired on March 6 to promote her new Netflix series With Love, Meghan, marking her first daytime television talk show moment in three years. Meghan, 43, highlights her passions for cooking, creating and entertaining in her new series, and she surprised Barrymore’s audience by bringing homemade cookies.

Meghan baked the cookies at home in Montecito the day before she flew to New York City to film The Drew Barrymore Show. She also had some help in the kitchen from her children: Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.

The Duchess of Sussex’s cookie project turned into a group affair, recruiting a friend and her daughter as well as Clare Waight Keller, who designed the wedding dress she wore in May 2018 for her walk down the aisle with Prince Harry.

“I said, ‘Clare, can I put you to work too?’ So we all sat around,” Meghan says. “We made these cookies for you guys to enjoy.”

In a montage clip that aired on the talk show, the group gathers around the kitchen — with Pula, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Labrador retriever, seen ready to scoop up any crumbs that get drooped. A girl who appears to be Lilibet uses a step stool to see, and Meghan is seen giving her son a kiss as he is seen from behind while working on the treats.

I just thought it’d be fun,” Meghan says, just before Barrymore tells the applauding crowd, “Meghan literally made cookies for all of you guys.”

The Duchess of Sussex shows off her culinary chops in With Love, Meghan, where she whipped up several sweet treats from scratch including a “beautiful on the inside” honey lemon cake, frosted doughnuts and sweet creamer for coffee.

“Baking is not my favorite thing, but I will do it for one of my favorite people,” she said with a smile in the first episode as she made the layer cake for a hangout with her friend, makeup artist Daniel Martin.

With Love, Meghan was not produced in a traditional “stand and stir” format— an industry term the Duchess of Sussex tells PEOPLE she learned during filming to describe most cooking shows.

It feels as though we’re just spending time together, which is what it ended up being,” Meghan tells PEOPLE in this week’s exclusive cover story about the crew’s presence on the series. “I’d make a recipe and say, ‘Everyone try this,’ and there are certain dishes where you just watch everyone flock in. I’d say, ‘We’ve run out of spoons!’ It ended up feeling so communal, and that’s the spirit of the show.”

Along with featuring her domestic skills, With Love, Meghan also features its star’s products, like the flower sprinkles she decorated doughnuts with before meeting up with chef Roy Choi.

In partnership with Netflix, asever.com will sell a collection of herbal teas, crepe mix, flower sprinkles, shortbread butter cookies, wildflower honey and, of course, her signature raspberry jam (the first product Meghan unveiled from her lifestyle line last year). The products will be available for sale in the U.S. this spring in a lineup unveiled on the With Love premiere day.

Despite the hype around her new ventures (and return to Instagram!), Meghan says that she doesn’t identify as an influencer.

“I see myself as an entrepreneur and a female founder, and if the brand ends up influential, then that’s great,” the Duchess of Sussex says.

Although the show paints a picture of domestic bliss, Meghan doesn’t consider herself a “tradwife” — shorthand for “traditional wife” — either.

“I like being able to do a hybrid,” she says of quick dinners at home with Prince Harry and their kids. Chinese food delivery is a favorite, “but even when I get takeout, I will try to plate it beautifully,” she says.

Despite her show’s beautiful imagery, she hopes her show will inspire others to strive for joy instead of perfection.

“The series is about doing what you can do, and doing it with love,” says the Duchess of Sussex.
