As he gets ready to meet with President Zelenskyy, Donald Trump’s latest remarks about Ukraine’s future may spark concern.

As vice president JD Vance prepares to meet with Ukrainian leader Voldomor Zelensky, Donald Trump has stated that “Ukraine may be Russian someday” during an interview with Fox.

Trump previously promised to end the war between Ukraine and Russia within 100 days of being president, but no solid details of a plan have emerged as yet.

In an interview with Fox on Monday night, he said, “They may make a deal, they may not make a deal. They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday.”

During the interview the president also discussed a return on investment with US aid to Ukraine, suggesting a trade for Kyiv’s rare earth materials.

“We are going to have all this money in there, and I say I want it back. And I told them that I want the equivalent, like $500bn worth of rare earth.

And they have essentially agreed to do that, so at least we don’t feel stupid”, he said.

Zelensky wants tougher security guarantees from Washington as part of any deal with Russia. While Trump has been very vocal about being able to put a stop to the war quickly, it is not yet clear how he will achieve it.

Ukraine worries that any settlement that does not include military commitments could allow Russia time to regroup and organise a stronger attack.

Zelensky said he wants “real peace and effective security guarantees” for his country.

Security of people, security of our state, security of economic relations and, of course, our resource sustainability: not only for Ukraine but for the entire free world. All of this is being decided now,” said Zelenskyy, in a video posted on social media.

Zelensky said a meeting with Trump was being arranged, however, no date had been fixed yet. Donald Trump also said last week he would “probably” meet Zelenskyy in the coming days, although he would not personally be travelling to Kyiv.

Since the outbreak of the war between Ukraine and Russia, the U.S. Congress has allocated over $170 billion to Ukraine, which included over $60 billion worth of military support, while the EU and its member countries have given $145 billion in financial, military, and humanitarian assistance.
