Donald Trump has declared that the US is “in a time of war” as he proclaims to deport members of the Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela
President Donald Trump has proclaimed that the US is “at war” with certain immigrants within its borders.
On Air Force One, a journalist questioned his use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, noting it “has only been invoked 3 other times” and “they were all during times or war.”
Trump responded with a startling seven-word declaration: “Well this is a time of war.” He had employed the 18th-century legislation on Saturday to expedite the removal of members of the Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela. However, a judge has since halted the action, citing the urgency to prevent further deportations.
The seldom-invoked act grants the president authority to detain and deport individuals from an “enemy” nation without adhering to standard procedures. This marks the first application of the Alien Enemies Act since World War II, reports the Irish Star.
Continuing his remarks aboard Air Force One, Trump said: “Biden allowed millions of people, many of them criminals, many of them at the highest level… Other nations emptied their jails out into the United States. That’s an invasion, and these are criminals, many, many criminals, murderers, drug dealers at the highest level, drug lords, people from mental institutions.
In that sense, this is war,” he asserted.
Trump further claimed that this situation is “more dangerous than war,” arguing that soldiers wear uniforms, which makes it clear who the enemy is.
In a bold move on Saturday, he announced: “To expedite removals of trendy Paraguay and other savage gangs like MS-13, which is equally vicious, I will invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.”
