Prince Harry and Meghan Markle famously stepped down as senior members of the royal family in 2020, and according to one expert, Harry viewed his wife as ‘a way out’

Prince Harry viewed Meghan Markle as his escape route from the Firm, according to a royal author.

Andrew Morton, who famously wrote Diana: Her True Story in 1992, has shared insights into how Harry started contemplating stepping down from the Firm just six months after tying the knot with Meghan in 2018.

The couple, now residing in Montecito, California with their children, made the decision to step back from royal duties in January 2020.

Their last official engagement was in March 2020, mere days before the Covid lockdown.

On The Mirror’s podcast Pod Save the King, Andrew revealed: “It didn’t work out because when it actually comes down to it, Prince Harry is cursed with charisma but hates being a prince and I think that he saw Meghan as a way out.”

Speaking about the late Queen, he mentioned that she would have been understanding, particularly as they had just welcomed their first child at the time.

He further stated: “The Queen had always been very understanding of anybody who wants to step back for a few years and just enjoy family life because you’re a long time being a royal,” reports the Express.

In addition to their five year old son Archie, the couple also welcomed their three year old daughter, Princess Lilibet, in 2021.

Harry and Meghan have only come back to the UK a handful of times, including King Charles’ coronation, as well as both Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeths’ funerals.
