Russia called Zelensky’s meeting with Donald Trump a “failure” after the two leaders clashed in the Oval Office.
Russia called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with United States President Donald Trump a “complete failure” after tension erupted between the two leaders.
“The visit of the head of the neo-Nazi regime, V Zelensky, to Washington on February 28 is a complete political and diplomatic failure of the Kyiv regime,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Saturday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Kyiv entered its third year after Moscow invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
The showdown has further strained US-Ukraine relations and made experts question Washington’s solidarity towards Kyiv as Moscow rains attacks on Ukraine.
Zakharova said Russia’s goals in Ukraine remain steadfast after Zelensky’s trip to Washington.
“Russia’s unchanging goals remain the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine, as well as the recognition of the existing realities on the ground,” she said, Reuters reported.
During their meeting, Trump, visibly upset, essentially appeared more sympathetic toward Putin as he asked Zelensky to “make a deal or we are out.”
He accused Zelensky of “disrespecting” the US in a separate Truth Social post.
“I have determined that President Zelensky is not ready for Peace if America is involved,” he wrote, using an alternative spelling of the leader’s name. “He can come back when he is ready for Peace,” he said.
Fox News reported that Zelensky said that Ukraine’s relationship with the US could be improved “of course.”
“I’m very thankful to Americans for all your support. You did a lot. I’m thankful to President Trump and to Congress bipartisan support. And I was always very thankful from all our people. You helped us a lot from the very beginning,” he said.
However, he refused to apologize.
“I respect the president and I respect the American people. I think we have to be open and we have to be honest. I’m not sure we did something bad. I think maybe sometimes, some things have to be discussed out of the media where we can understand the position of Ukraine,” he added
