The California governor didn’t hold back, warning that this power grab could ‘destabilize our democracy’ before a single vote is cast in 2026. ‘This is an affront to American democracy,’ Newsom declared, vowing California won’t stand idly by.
This clash follows Trump’s push for Republican-controlled states to redraw maps after the 2018 midterms flipped the House to Democrats.

Texas Democrats are fighting back too, with dozens refusing to return to the Statehouse. Rep. Rhetta Bowers stated, ‘Democrats, especially in Texas, are standing firm,’ as they aim to block the GOP’s agenda.
