The Princess of Wales and her kids broke out the art supplies for the fun art session
Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have inherited their mom Kate Middleton’s artistic skills
On Feb. 17, the Princess of Wales shared four heartfelt family portraits, created during a special art session with her children. The activity was part of her ongoing support for the Shaping Us initiative from The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, which highlights the importance of creative play in child development.
Each of the young royals appeared to choose their mother as their subject. Prince Louis used bold red and orange strokes for his drawing, while Princess Charlotte opted for shades of blue, green, purple, and yellow—her sketch featuring long hair, suggesting it may be a portrait of Kate. Prince George’s detailed sketch appears to depict his mother sitting in a chair, showcasing his growing artistic skill. Meanwhile, Kate’s own detailed portrait seems to capture Louis with his eyes closed.
Princess Kate, 43, launched the center in 2021 to raise awareness around the importance of the early years on the rest of a child’s life, and the Shaping Us Framework was unveiled in early February as a new blueprint to hone that focus.
The @earlychildhood Shaping Us Framework describes the social and emotional skills which start to develop in early childhood,” read the caption of the Instagram post. “These skills are key throughout our lives, shaping who we are, how we manage our thoughts and emotions, how we communicate with and relate to others, and how we explore the world around us.”
Drawing portraits with children can provide a moment of connection as you spend time looking at and focusing on one another, as well as being creative and – most importantly – having lots of fun together!” it continued. The message closed with a paintbrush emoji and portrait credit to “Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte, Prince George and The Princess of Wales.”
The Princess of Wales is known for her artistic side, and she majored in art history at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where she met husband Prince William.
Kate’s creative activity with her kids follows her stop at the National Portrait Gallery in London with a kindergarten class to see The Bobeam Tree Trail. The trail is designed as an interactive journey through the renowned gallery to spark social and emotional learning and the project is the first of its kind to be created from the Shaping Us Framework from The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.
The Princess of Wales rode a school bus with students, explored the museum (which she backs as patron) and helped the children draw portraits of their own.
Liz Smith, director of learning and engagement at the National Portrait Gallery, tells PEOPLEt that Princess Kate was “naturally nurturing and was listening and integrated with the group. She was one of the school party, and there was no official presentation. It was as if she was one of the mums, one of the helpers and, as you are on a school trip, you’re learning as you’re walking and making sense of the environment. It was a real treat.”
Princess Kate’s visit to the National Portrait Gallery was one of her first outings of the new year after sharing on Jan. 14 that she is in remission from cancer. The royal was outside of the limelight last year after announcing in March 2024, and sharing in September that she completed chemo.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are expected to be outside of the public eye this week as they vacation with their children during George, Charlotte and Louis’ break from school.
