Copy-kate! Queen Mary of Denmark channels one of the Princess of Wales’s signature looks in Copenhagen
They’re the royal ‘style twins’ whose elegance has been heralded by the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, and Queen Mary of Denmark once again proved that she and the Princess of Wales have more in common than just their regal roles.
Stepping out for one of her first engagements of 2026, the Danish Queen paid something of a sartorial tribute to Catherine, channelling one of her favourite outfits
For a visit to the Danish Heart Association, of which she is patron, Queen Mary stepped out in a forest green suit that was reminiscent of the tailoring loved by her British counterpart. While Catherine has green suits by labels including Burberry, Veronica Beard and Victoria Beckham, the designer of Queen Mary’s suit remains unknown.
Queen Mary kept the styling of her look simple and elegant, wearing her brunette locks sleek and loose and adding a splash of colour with bold red nail polish. Like Kate, Queen Mary favours a ‘less is more’ approach when it comes to her accessories and seemed to be wearing little more than her engagement ring and a slim belt.
During the visit, Queen Mary spent time with three young people who spoke about what it is like to live with a congenital heart defect and what challenges it presents in everyday life. The Queen also received an introduction to the Heart Association’s new strategy with a stronger focus on prevention, and met advisers from the Heart Association
It has been a busy couple of weeks for King Frederik and Queen Mary, who today mark two years on the throne. The royal couple welcomed the new year with the traditional gala at Amalienborg Palace (at which Queen Mary dazzled in a newly-commissioned diamond tiara) and hosted a second formal engagement just days later. A third black tie occasion took place just one week ago.
This is certainly not the first time that Queen Mary and Kate Middleton have stepped out in similar styles. Not for nothing did the late Karl Lagerfeld once note: ‘Kate is like a younger sister to Mary, who is both beautiful and elegant.’ Take, for example, Queen Mary’s display at the Copenhagen Arts and Culture Ball last February, when she wore one of the Princess of Wales’ most storied gowns: the pearlescent rose-pink sequin dress by British designer Jenny Packham.
