Prince William once shared that he felt his late mother Princess Diana at his wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011. As reported by People magazine, in the 2017 ITV and HBO documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William revealed, “When it came to the wedding, I did really feel that she was there. You know, there are times when you look to someone or something for strength, and I very much felt she was there for me.”

The documentary, which also features Prince Harry, was released ahead of the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death in a Paris car crash. Both brothers spoke candidly about their mother and how her absence has shaped their lives. William, who was 15 when Diana passed away, admitted that she never truly left him. He said, “They always live with you, people you lose, like that. And my mother lives with me every day. I give thanks that I was lucky enough to be her son and that I got to know her for the 15 years that I did.” Williamfurther claimed that he still sees glimpses of Diana in his everyday life. She stressed, “There are not many days that go by that I don’t think of her, you know.”

I have a smile every now and again when someone says something, and I think, ‘That’s exactly what she would have said,’ or, ‘She would have enjoyed that comment.’” William noted that this would likely be the last time they would speak about Diana in such a public setting. He declared, “We won’t speak as openly and as publicly about her again.” Meanwhile, Harry, who was 12 at the time of their mother’s death, spoke about Diana’s warmth. He shared that she was the kind of person who “would just engulf and squeeze [them] as tight as possible”—afeeling and sense of security that only a mother can provide.

The royal wedding, which took place on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey, was watched by millions around the world. Thousands gathered outside to celebrate, and 1,900 guests were in attendance inside the abbey. Aside from William’s emotional recollection of his mother’s presence, Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, also claimed that her spirit remained close. According to Mirror, Burrell believes that Diana still watches over her family. He said, “When you have loved someone in life—and I didlove her—and they pass very quickly, a little piece of them remains behind, and you carry them with you for the rest of your days.”

He added, “If my Princess wanted to tell me something, I think she would come to me.” Burrell, who had witnessed Diana’s interest in spirituality, shared that she frequently sought guidance from mediums, psychics, and astrologers and would often tease him about his skepticism, laughing and asking, “‘You don’t believe, do you?'”
