Former US State Department official Andrew Miller said that US President Donald Trump “doesn’t care about Jews,” and that the arrest of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil is being used to set “a precedent for further assaults on free speech” in the country.

In a post Thursday on X, he warned the US was on a road to state-controlled speech.

Several rights groups criticized the comment, saying Trump alluded to the word

Criticism of Trump’s remarks extended beyond the Schumer comments, with fears growing over broader implications. Concerns grew after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took Khalil into custody while he and his pregnant wife were on their way to Columbia’s residential housing, where they lived.

The Trump administration is attempting to deport Khalil, who is a legal permanent resident of the US, because of his prominent role in pro-Palestinian student protests at Columbia University over the past year.

While many oppose the move as unconstitutional, some defend Khalil’s potential deportation as being in favor of American sovereignty.

Shai Davidai, an Israeli assistant professor in the management division of Columbia Business School, has voiced opposition to pro-Palestinian protests at the university.

His bio on X reads: “Barred from @Columbia for speaking out against anti-Jewish, anti-Israel and anti-American terrorism.”

Davidai blames Khalil for leading a student coalition that “spreads terrorist propaganda.”

“As a married, 31-year-old graduate student who has repeatedly violated the conditions of his green card, Khalil’s potential deportation is the direct consequence of the choices he has made,” he said in a post on X.

The assistant professor said he is a strong advocate of free speech, while disagreeing that Khalil was apprehended for exercising his First Amendment rights.

This isn’t about free speech – it’s about respecting and upholding the rule of law,” he added, referring to Khalil’s trial.
