The United States canceled a meeting between President Trump’s Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg was canceled in the eleventh hour amid tension between Kyiv and DC.
The United States canceled a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump’s Ukraine envoy, according to a Kyiv official.
The news will be a delight to Russia’s de-factor dictator Vladimir Putin whose government is buoyant that Trump is trying to drive Ukraine to the peace table with debilitating concessions.
Trump’s envoy retired U.S. Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg met with Zelensky in Kyiv after Trump and the Ukrainian president began feuding, surging concerns about the future of Washington and Kyiv relations.
The two entered the same room, shook hands and sat on opposite ends of the table with reporters present before learning the meeting to discuss ending the war had been canceled at the eleventh hour, The Associated Press reports.
The latest development has surged fears about a quick deal favoring the interests of the Kremlin, which experts warn could lead to further encroachment in Europe and government coups.
Trump had a private phone call with both Putin and Zelensky ahead of the Munich Security Conference over the weekend, in which the U.S. declared that it would be dwindling its financial and military support to Kyiv, in a sharp U-turn from Washington’s policy under the Biden administration.
Trump has since urged Zelensky to make major land concessions to Moscow and give up security aspirations of joining NATO to quickly end the war, which just entered its third year, aligning Washington’s position with that of the Kremlin.
