NFL fans may have fatigue over the Kansas City Chiefs. But when it comes to the league’s media partners, they can’t get enough of one of the hottest dynasties in sports.

The Chiefs have gone from bridesmaids with a lone Super Bowl title in 1970 to a full-blown powerhouse, winning three Super Bowls and reaching seven straight AFC Championship Games with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes leading the way. Although they couldn’t become the first time in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls, the Chiefs have become one of the league’s most successful franchises with 10 straight double-digit win seasons.

It’s a rags to riches story that has dominated the NFL and is about to get thrown into a different kind of spotlight with the league’s latest announcement on Friday.

ESPN to Produce Docuseries on Chiefs’ 2024 Season

ESPN announced on Friday that they will be producing a six-episode docuseries on Kansas City’s 2024 season that will premiere later this year. The docuseries will be available on ESPN and Disney+ and will follow the team’s march to Super Bowl LIX.

“This series will explore the legacy of the Chiefs franchise while also showcasing the emotional highs and lows of building a championship-winning team,” ESPN president of content Burke Magnus said in a press release. “From the brilliance of Patrick Mahomes to the leadership of Andy Reid and the passion of Chiefs Kingdom, this project will showcase the drama, intensity and heart that make this team a global phenomenon.”

The docuseries is the latest in an effort by the NFL to feed fans’ appetite for behind the scenes content. What started with HBO’s Hard Knock series which began in 2001 and now has training camp, in-season and off-season variations has turned into an avalanche for your binge-watching pleasure. Netflix has cashed in with the Quarterback and Receiver docuseries and those episodes have turned into just as big of an event as the actual games.

The Chiefs series will be directed by Kristen Lappas of Words + Pictures and produced by much of the team behind “The Last Dance,” which documented Michael Jordan’s final season with the NBA’s Chicago Bulls in 1997.

There also won’t be a shortage of content opportunities as the Chiefs marched their way to a 15-2 record with 12 total games decided by one score or less including a 32-29 playoff win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.

With the possibility of a potential cameo by Taylor Swift, the documentary should be enough to reach multiple audiences, turning the NFL’s steady stream of content like water out of a fire hose.
