Meghan Markle, who’s making waves with her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, has been hard at work promoting it. During her recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, she opened up about her new project and personal life. Having met Princess Diana herself, host Barrymore surprised Markle with a picture of her late mother-in-law. Overcome with emotion, the Duchess made a heartwarming four-word remark.
Markle over the years has candidly expressed admiration for Diana, even naming her daughter ‘Lilibet Diana’ in her honor. Hence, Barrymore—who met Diana at just seven years old—showed Markle a picture of her run-in with the Princess. She recounted, “It means so much to me to have met such an incredible human being who transcended everything.” Markle, pleasantly surprised by the rare throwback photo, said, “Oh, mygosh, look at your little face. Oh, that’s so sweet. That is so special that you had it here.” She added, “That’s really special, Drew,” and assured the host that she would pass along her heartfelt words to Harry.
Meanwhile, Markle herself never had the chance to meet her late mother-in-law, who tragically passed away in 1997. But, the Duchess has consistently found ways to honor her memory. She regularly ensures that she pays homage to Diana through her clothes and jewelry. According to Harpers Bazaar, Markle wears the gold Cartier Tank watch that Harry gifted her, which once belonged to his mother. During a trip to Nigeria last year, she also wore the diamond-encrusted cross pendant that belonged to Diana.
The Duchess of Sussex has also given a heartfelt shoutout to the late Princess in her new Netflix series. According to Tatler, in the first episode, she was seen wearing the Queen Water Drop Moonstone Necklace, which contains Diana’s moonstone. In an Instagram story, Markle also rocked Diana’s 1996 famous Northwestern University sweatshirt. The sweet nod to Diana, however, reportedly made Prince William furious. An insider spilled to Radar Online. “He has always been incredibly protective of his mother’s legacy, and he sees Meghan’s repeated nods to Diana’s style as more than justfashion choices—they feel calculated.”
Harry and Markle have consistently honored Diana’s legacy through their work. Much of their charitable focus aligns with causes Diana was deeply passionate about, including mental health, women’s empowerment, and HIV/AIDS awareness. At their fairytale wedding, Markle paid tribute to Diana by wearing her iconic aquamarine ring. Additionally, she carried a bouquet of white roses—one of Diana’s favorite flowers—as a heartfelt tribute to the late Princess. Interestingly, when Diana passed away in 1997, Markleonly a teenager at the time, was so moved that she along with her friend decided to look around their house and donate what they could to the needy in memory of Diana.
