Meghan Markle has been criticized for appearing to ‘move’ a Team Canada member’s wheelchair at the Invictus Games without asking permission.
Meghan Markle came under fire during an Invictus Games event, as she met with Team Canada alongside her husband Prince Harry.
The Duchess of Sussex is in Canada with Prince Harry for the international sporting event he initiated back in 2014. The pair joined the athletes at the True Patriot Love Foundation breakfast, as they caught up prior to the events starting.
However, Meghan appeared to move a wheelchair user at one point, without asking her permission. The manoeuvre was caught on camera and features in an Instagram clip with people being quick to point out the move is a huge ‘no-no’.
Taking to social media to share their dismay at Meghan’s apparent maneuver, one person posted: “My daughter is in a wheelchair, and someone else trying to move it is a huge NO! Their wheelchair is an extension of themselves. Meghan is in her personal space and needs to stop.”
Another shared: “So rude and disrespectful!” A third posted: “Isn’t that woman in the wheelchair an athlete? Why does she need to be pushed? I’ve had that happen it’s very rude to presume you can just push someone without asking if they require assistance, disabled doesn’t mean dumb.” Whilst a fourth shared: “Some of the onlookers look horrified too.”
The comments and criticism comes as Meghan gave a touching introduction for her husband Prince Harry at the opening of the Invictus Games this week. Standing at the podium for her opening speech, she told those gathered that she hadn’t even planned to speak.
She said: “I was not planning on speaking tonight. We just arrived a couple of hours ago, and I touched Canadian soil, and I went, ‘Oh, feels like home.’ We are so excited and we also recognize most of you are probably so exhausted from how much travel you’ve done, how much adrenaline you have pumping, how excited you are for what is going to be one of the most outstanding, memorable, unforgettable and connected weeks probably for you and for your families.”
