King Charles has made a rare comment about the Invictus Games after meeting with one of Prince Harry’s personal friends during a royal engagement.
King Charles has come face to face with a close friend of his estranged son Prince Harry during a major royal engagement.
The King, 76, stepped out in London on Wednesday to tour the Imperial College London’s Centre for Injury Studies.
Charles viewed the centre’s cutting-edge virtual reality biofeedback technology, which was demonstrated by former Army captain and parasport athlete David Henson.
Mr Henson is a bronze medal-winning Paralympian and former Invictus Games trustee who lost both of his legs in 2011 when he stood on an IED during an attempt to clear a building of mines in Afghanistan so locals could return.
Harry helped set up Invictus in 2014 as an Olympics-style international sporting event for injured and wounded service men and women across the globe.
David and his wife Hayley Henson were also high profile guests at Harry’s royal wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018.
The King chatted briefly with Mr Henson during the tour and it is understood Mr Henson brought up Invictus during the conversation.
“Are you still taking part in games and sports?” the King reportedly asked.
“I did the Invictus Games in 2014 and 2016, Paralympics in 2016 and I stayed one of the trustees of the Invictus Games until the end of 2023 – so I’ve certainly been involved with it.
“I’m back in the defence industry now.”
“Fantastic,” Charles replied.
The remark is one of the few occasions where the monarch has mentioned Invictus and comes days after the first ever winter edition of the games concluded in Canada on Sunday.
This year’s games were staged in Vancouver and Whistler and featured winter adaptive sports, including alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, skeleton, and wheelchair curling.
The event marked a major public relations success for the Sussexes and event organisers, with Harry enthusiastically attending most events and inviting special guests including his distant cousin Prince Joachim of Denmark.
On the final day of play on Sunday, Harry was joined by Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau as they watched the Indoor Rowing at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
