Ayo Edebiri slams Elon Musk for spreading a fake ‘Pirates’ casting rumor that led to death threats and racial slurs.
Ayo Edebiri revealed that she faced extreme death threats and racial slurs after Elon Musk spread a false report claiming she was set to replace Johnny Depp in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The Bear Emmy winner took to Instagram to call out Musk, who shared the hoax in February 2024, adding his own comment: “Disney sucks.”
Edebiri reacted to Musk’s post, writing, “Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life…for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man. LMAO. So not only is he double Sieg Heil-ing fascist, he’s an idiot but anyway.”
She also backed comedian Bill Burr, who recently criticized Musk, calling him a “Nazi” and mocking his influence. Edebiri responded with a bullseye emoji, showing her agreement with Burr’s remarks.
Despite speculation, Disney has not confirmed any casting for the Pirates reboot, which is being developed by writer Jeff Nathanson. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously praised Nathanson’s script, stating, “He’s cracked it…we just gotta clean up the first and second act.”
While Johnny Depp’s return as Jack Sparrow remains uncertain, Bruckheimer has expressed interest in bringing him back.
Meanwhile, Edebiri is set to star in A24’s horror film Opus, hitting theaters on March 14.
