The Chiefs’ owner also spoke about Kelce’s decision to not retire
KANSAS City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared a simple message to the rest of the NFL over Travis Kelce and his decision to return to play in his 13th season.
The 35-year-old Kelce contemplated retirement following the Chiefs’ disaster Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February.
NFL fans waited weeks after the big game loss for Kelce’s decision to play in the 2025 campaign.
However, Reid already knew the decision days after the Super Bowl defeat.
On Monday, the 67-year-old Reid appeared at the NFL’s annual meeting and shared that Kelce told him he’d play again less than a week after the Eagles’ win.
Reid wasn’t afraid to also warn the rest of the league that Kelce has a chip on his shoulder this offseason.
I just wanted him to put it out there and not me,” Reid explained, per The Athletic.
“I always like guys to step back (after the season), but he wants to come back, and he’s training like crazy too.”
Kelce certainly has the motivation to bounce back and perform following one of his worst career seasons to his first-ballot Hall of Fame standards.
In 2024, he posted career lows in receiving yards (823) and touchdowns (3) when you take away his rookie campaign, where he played in just one game.
Reid believes that Kelce’s production had to do with the Chiefs’ offense that had numerous injuries, and thinks that he can still be a force in the NFL.
“I just didn’t think that was an issue this year, but I thought we were banged up at the outside positions and that doesn’t help a tight end’s cause at all,” Reid said.
“I just think the healthier we can be around him – he can still be productive.”
The Chiefs’ injured players on offense include Marquise Brown, Isiah Pacheco, and Rashee Rice, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in September.
“He’s willing. He’s learning when to come out, so he’ll get himself out of the game when he needs it. And I think that’ll just continue with age,” Reid said about Kelce’s mindset.
Chiefs’ ownership made it known that they’re thrilled to have Kelce back with the red and gold this season.
