Breaking: Kremlin celebrates Putin and Trump’s phone call with chilling five-word statement…..See More

The two leaders spoke a week after Putin said he agreed in principle with a US plan for a 30-day Ukraine truce.

Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin have spoken for more than an hour in a crucial phone call, as the US President seeks Moscow’s sign-off on a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

Following the conversation on Tuesday, Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, celebrated the call.

“Under the leadership of President Putin and President Trump, the world has become a much safer place today,” he said.

The White House and Kremlin did not offer any immediate details about the conversation.

Last week, Putin said he agreed in principle with the US truce proposal, but added that a number of “issues” still needed to be worked out. Putin said that the ceasefire should lead to an “enduring peace” and “remove underlying causes of this crisis.

He said issues with the truce included the need to develop a mechanism to control possible violations and whether Ukraine could continue receiving arms shipments during the 30-day pause.

Before the call, Trump said the US and Russia had already begun discussing “dividing up certain assets” between Kyiv and Moscow as part of a deal to end the conflict.

After a disastrous meeting with Zelensky at the White House last month, Trump temporarily cut off some military intelligence-sharing and aid to Ukraine. It resumed after Kyiv last week signed off on the truce proposal.

On Monday, Zelensky remained skeptical about Putin’s intentions.

Almost a week later, it’s clear to everyone in the world, even to those who refused to acknowledge the truth for the past three years, that it is Putin who continues to drag out this war,” Zelensky said.

Trump has had a fraught relationship with Zelensky since taking office. The US president last month called the Ukrainian leader a “dictator” and falsely accused Kyiv of starting the war. Zelensky responded by saying Trump was living in a Russian-made “disinformation space.”

Trump has previously touted his good relationship with Putin and called the Russian leader “pretty smart” for invading Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces launched an incursion in Russia’s Kursk border region in August 2024, but Ukraine’s troops are now in retreat and it has all but lost a valuable bargaining chip.
