EXCLUSIVE: Donald Trump has been invited to the UK for a state visit… now what? Royal historian Carolyn Harris explains what this means and what to expect.
The Royal Family is expected to steer clear of politics, but at the same time King Charles has the ability to exert subtle diplomatic influence, which may play a role in Donald Trump’s decision-making in regards to UK tariffs.
Royal historian Carolyn Harris, who is a Professor at University of Toronto, shared her thoughts on the forthcoming US state visit, which is still pending, but the invite has been made official by Charles via Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Harris told Daily Express US the invite is a package deal, that Charles is acting on the advice of his Prime Minister and is counting on Trump’s admiration for the Royal Family in maintaining the UK and US’s “special relationship.”
Harris said: “As a constitutional monarch, King Charles III is acting on the advice of his British Prime Minister Keir Starmer both in inviting American President Donald Trump for a state visit to the United Kingdom and in inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Sandringham.”
She added: “The British government is clearly attempting to maintain a favorable trade relationship with President Trump at a time when Trump is imposing tariffs on longtime allies such as Canada while also signalling support for Ukraine in keeping with the rest of Europe. As sovereign, the King is part of this delicate diplomatic balance.”
Trump accepted the invitation on the spot, and is expected to visit the UK at some point this year, and if and when that does happen, it would be the first time a US president has made two state visits to the UK.
Harris talked about how this came about and the importance of the visit
She said: “By advising the King to invite Trump on a state visit, Starmer is attempting to secure a favorable trade agreement between the United Kingdom and United States by appealing to Trump’s admiration for the Royal Family.”
The dates have yet to be confirmed, but Harris believes Trump will see this through
She added: “President Trump has long expressed admiration for the monarchy and even claimed to be Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite president even though there is evidence to the contrary.”
Harris went over what to expect if and when the US state visit does in fact take place.
She said: “If the US state visit goes ahead in the coming months, the details of the arrangements will be significant including the seating plan and the choice of artifacts on display from the Royal Collection to highlight the historic relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.”
She added: “The monarch has the ability to bring people together to share their ideas and King Charles III will host receptions that include guests with a wide variety of perspectives on the future of the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.”
