In today’s NFL, when fans and analysts debate who the best quarterback is, the conversation typically revolves around Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, orJared Goff. Mahomes leads with three Super Bowl wins, Allen is a dual-threat with highlight-reel throws, and Goff continues to lead the Lions to heights they haven’t seen in years. But according to NFL legend Tom Brady, none of those stars currently holds the title of the best passer in the league.Instead, Brady recently endorsed a surprising name: Justin Herbert, quarterback of the Los Angeles Chargers.
Brady, a 23-season veteran and seven-time Super Bowl champion, holds the most prestigious passing records in NFL history. That includes 89,214 passing yards, 649 touchdowns, and more than 12,000 pass attempts. With that kind of résumé, any quarterback he praises deserves serious attention.During a recent Fox Sports broadcast, Brady made a bold statement about the Chargers’ franchise QB.”If they protect Justin Herbert, he’s the best passer in the league,” Brady said. “Give him help with quick plays, screens, and a strong run game to limit the hits he takes.”

Brady emphasized that Herbert’s success hinges on more than just his own talent, it’s also about the system and protection around him.Justin Herbert’s record-breaking start.
Since being drafted sixth overall in 2020, Herbert has quietly built one of the most impressive statistical starts in NFL history. In each of his first three seasons, he threw for over 4,300 yards, including a career-high 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2021.

Entering Week 6 of the 2025 season, Herbert has already surpassed 22,000 career passing yards and has thrown 144 touchdowns to just 48 interceptions. His arm strength, accuracy, and poise in the pocket are elite, and no quarterback in league history has passed for more yards in their first five seasons, topping Peyton Manning’s previous mark.In a recent game, Herbert went 22 of 29 for 166 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also added 60 rushing yards on just four carries, showing his ability to extend plays with his legs. Despite the strong performance, the Chargers lost 27-10. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has also sung Herbert’s praises, calling him the “toughest quarterback in NFL history.” Harbaugh noted that Herbert’s biggest challenge is not his own play, but getting the rest of the offense – receivers, linemen, and coaching staff – up to his level. While the Chargers currently sit at 3-2 and Herbert holds a 44-40 career record as a starter, it’s clear he has the tools to become the league’s most dominant passer. Brady’s endorsement may raise eyebrows, but if Herbert stays healthy and the Chargers build the right system around him, the NFL may soon have a new quarterback sitting atop the throne.
