The film’s director Lana Wilson is speaking out.

Taylor Swift’s relationship with her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn wasn’t a major story line in her 2020 Netflix documentary Miss Americana, and that was an intentional choice—according to the movie’s director Lana Wilson.

Four years later, Wilson is speaking out about her filmmaking decisions and why she decided to not have Alwyn star as a main character. “I didn’t even meet him till the very end,” she recently told The Daily Mail at a movie screening in New York City. “Her [Swift’s] relationships have been through the microscope. I didn’t really have any interest in filming that.”

Wilson went on to explain that Swift had “been through so much,” and that this aspect of her personal life “should be private.” Plus, she noted that the former couple’s romance wasn’t even relevant “to the themes in the film or what I thought she was going through right then

I thought she was going through something so profound and powerful, this real change that didn’t really have anything to do with her relationships,” Wilson continued. “So, it was never something I wanted to film, actually. It felt disrespectful and weird to me

That’s not to say the British actor was completely left out of the film. Swifties might remember that Awlyn’s back was visible as he gave her a hug backstage after a Reputation tour performance. And while viewers never actually see his face, the mystery man wore a denim jacket with a black baseball hat that showed off his blonde hair that looked a lot like Alwyn’s underneath. There’s also a scene where Swift is driving a car in what appeared to be the U.K. and kisses the right hand of whomever was in the passenger seat—again, one can likely presume it’s Alwyn.

Swift and Alwyn broke up after dating for six years in April 2023. The Grammy-winner began seeing Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce a few months after their split, while Alwyn has been rumored to be dating Kendall Jenner after both attended the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Gala in October
