Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting, expected to bring Ukraine one step closer to peace, descended into a shouting match.
US Senator Lindsey Graham said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky needs to “change or go” after his meeting with Donald Trump on Friday. Speaking to the media after the high-profile meeting between the Ukrainian and US leaders descended into chaos, Mr Graham said, referring to Mr Zelensky: “I told him this morning, don’t take the bait, don’t let the media or anybody else get you into an argument with President Trump.”
Speaking to a group of reporters outside the White House, he added: “Zelensky is going to have to fundamentally change or go.” Posting on X, Mr Graham said: “I’ve never been more proud of President Trump for showing the American people – and the world – you don’t trifle with this man.
He wants to end the war and Zelensky felt like he needed to bait Trump in the Oval Office.”
Speaking to Fox News, Mr Graham said: “This is a missed opportunity.
The message for the Ukrainian people is: I don’t know if Zelensky can get you where you need to be with the United States.
Nevertheless some Republican supporters of Ukraine lamented his meeting with Trump descending into open debate
In a statement, Representative Don Bacon, R-Neb., said it was “A bad day for America’s foreign policy.”
He said: “Ukraine wants independence, free markets and rule of law.
