In a tragic and shocking accident that shook the global sports community, the Portuguese star Diogo Jota, forward for the English club Liverpool, lost his life early this Thursday morning in a horrific car accident that occurred in the Zamora region of Spain, along with his younger brother Andre, a player for the Portuguese club Penafiel.
The accident occurred specifically at kilometer 65 of the A-52 road, in the mountainous region of Sanabria located in the northwest of Spain, when the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading it to veer off the road and catch fire completely. According to eyewitnesses, the car ignited immediately after the accident, preventing any chance of rescuing the passengers, as the flames consumed both the vehicle and the surrounding vegetation.
The news was not only more sorrowful due to the loss of a prominent star in European football, but the tragedy was compounded by the death of his brother Andre Jota, who was 26 years old and with him at the time. Andre was also a professional football player with the Portuguese club Penafiel.
Diogo Jota, who was 28 years old, joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton for approximately 44.7 million euros.
During his five years with the ‘Reds’, he participated in 182 matches, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.
He was one of the standout stars who contributed to the club winning three major titles:
The Premier League (2024-2025)
The FA Cup (2021-2022)
The EFL Cup (2021-2022)
Jota’s professional career began at Paços de Ferreira in Portugal, before moving to Atlético Madrid and then to Porto on loan, where he shone with Wolverhampton in the Premier League, opening the door for his transfer to Liverpool. He was known for his intelligent scoring and dangerous movements in the penalty area, as well as his fighting spirit and calm personality off the pitch.
The news of Jota’s death has caused a wave of sadness among Liverpool fans and the Portuguese and global football community. An official statement from Liverpool has yet to be issued, but social media has been filled with condolences from stars and fans who mourned the player and expressed their deep sorrow.
Spanish authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the accident, and the bodies are expected to be transported to Portugal in the coming hours for funeral arrangements. The player is likely to receive an official and public farewell in appreciation of what he contributed to Portuguese and European football.
