Prince Andrew’s home Royal Lodge is reportedly in a “shocking state” despite the Duke of York’s insistence he has financial resources to maintain the sprawling home.
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s sprawling home Royal Lodge is reportedly still beset by maintenance issues months after the Duke of York committed to restoration work on the property.
The Duke and Duchess of York divorced in 1996, but have lived together in the sprawling 19th-century Royal Lodge since 2003 under a generous 75-year lease from the Crown Estate.
Royal Lodge is one of the Crown Estate’s showcase properties in leafy Windsor Great Park and was once the home of King Charles and Andrew’s grandmother, the Queen Mother.
Andrew and Fergie, both 65, have faced the looming threat of eviction for over a year and Charles is eager for his disgraced brother, who carries out no official duties, to downsize to a less ostentatious property.
The Yorks reportedly staved off eviction after presenting a new financial plan to the privy purse to show they had the money to maintain the showcase home.
On Monday, an insider told GB News that the Duke of York has “been doing his own gardening” to hammer down costs but that the entire property is still in a “shocking state.”
According to luxury property expert Terry Fisher of We Buy Any Home, Royal Lodge requires a full time staff of at least “four to six gardeners” just to maintain the grounds.
“Without regular attention, overgrowth can quickly spiral out of control, requiring professional intervention to restore order,” he told GB News on Monday.
“Maintaining 21 acres of gardens at a property like Royal Lodge would typically require a dedicated team of four to six gardeners, depending on the complexity of the landscaping.”
Mr Fisher said that maintaining the landscaping of Royal Lodge could exceed $300,000 AUD in gardening costs annually.
Costs can vary, but hiring experienced gardeners could range from £30,000 to £40,000 (about $59,000 to $63,000 AUD) annually per gardener, meaning the total annual maintenance bill could easily exceed £150,000 ($300,000 AUD),” he said.
“This would cover routine tasks like mowing, pruning, planting, and general upkeep to ensure the grounds remain in top condition.”
That figure does not include any of the costs associated with running and maintaining the main house, which boasts 30 rooms, including seven bedrooms and a saloon.
