The Prince and Princess are set to radically reimagine the seat of power

It has been a tumultuous 2024 for the House of Windsor, the ruling family of the United Kingdom. Questions continue to mount about the future of the 950-year-old monarchy amidst an investigation that revealed that King Charles III was crowned last year at significant taxpayer expense…before a cancer diagnosis came down for the king.

Charles’ son William, the next in line for the throne as the Prince of Wales, knows a thing or two about the impact of a deadly disease like cancer in his family. William’s wife Kate Middleton — the Princess of Wales — recently concluded cancer treatment herself, a grueling six months out of the limelight that impacted her 13-year marriage into the royal family. However, Kate has since resumed her royal duties amidst regular public appearances — and now that she is in improved health, attention is turning once more to the succession.

Charles’ recent appearances have prompted grave concern that the 76-year-old monarch is losing his year-long fight with cancer and given rise to the idea that William and Kate will be crowned King and Queen sooner rather than later. A new report cites a royal family insider who is privy to the royal couple’s plans whenever they succeed Charles and Camilla — and they plan to break with the past.

“She and William want to focus on truly helping people through their charitable endeavors and dial down all the pomp and circumstance,” the insider claimed.

Kate and Willam reportedly disagree with the monarchy’s regular “royal tours” that offer little in the way of actionable help to people living in the United Kingdom’s former colonies. They would rather lean on “experts and activists who are capable of effecting real change” rather than jetting across the world as they aim to “keep the monarchy relevant” in the 21st century.

This mindset sounds a lot like the one adopted by William’s brother, Harry. After marrying American actress Meghan Markle, Harry and his new bride decided to leave the UK and step down as working royals; they moved to the United States after encountering numerous difficulties within the royals’ various rules, norms, and traditions.

Perhaps Kate and William’s approach, if enacted upon their ascension, will go some way toward bridging the bitter divide between Harry and William. Only time will tell, but the monarchy seems poised to undergo a radical transformation in the years to come.
