Joachim and Marie traveled to Invictus in a “continued commitment to veterans,” the Danish Royal House said

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark wrapped the Invictus Games in a relatable way that doubled as an unusual royal move

On Feb. 16, the Danish royal couple posted a selfie with a personal message to celebrate the end of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025. Prince Joachim and Princess Marie live with their kids in the United States and traveled to Canada to support the Danish delegation at the seventh cycle of the international adaptive sports tournament for veterans that Prince Harry launched in 2014 as a means for healing.

Thanks for this time, InvictusGames,” Prince Joachim, 55, and Princess Marie, 49, wrote below a selfie shared to the official Instagram account of the Danish Royal House. The shot showed them smiling in Team Denmark Invictus gear, with the squad’s exuberant supporters behind them.

“It was a great and life-affirming experience! We are incredibly proud of our participants and their accompanying families and friends,” said the message attributed to the royal couple, translated into English.

Though there aren’t many selfies shared to the Danish royal family’s official Instagram grid, the snap met the friendly energy of the Invictus competition. Royals from around the world have seemed to slowly embrace selfies in recent years to meet today’s times, with Prince William and Kate Middleton partaking when people ask and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle smiling for lots of pictures at Invictus.

Joachim and Marie attended the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15, making the trip to attend some of the Danish team’s training sessions and support them in the stands. King Frederik’s brother and his wife also spent time with the athletes and their families behind the scenes, and had a court side chat with Prince Harry at a sitting volleyball match on Saturday.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie live in Washington, D.C. with their two children, Count Henrik, 15, and Countess Athena, 13, and the couple’s plans to attend the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler were announced in advance. The Danish Royal House said then that supporting veterans was important to the couple, and they did just that by going to the Invictus Games.

The presence at the Invictus Games is part of The Prince and Princess’s continued commitment to veterans, and Their Royal Highnesses wish to emphasize the importance of support and community for those who have served their country,” the court said in a statement.

Joachim and Marie moved to the U.S. in the summer of 2023 for the prince to start a new job at the Danish Embassy under the Ministry of Defense. They couple made the transatlantic move one year after Prince Joachim’s mother, Queen Margrethe, stripped his four kids of the prince and princess titles they had inherited at birth in a surprise step she later described as “necessary future-proofing of the monarchy.” Joachim later told The Washington Post that “We’ve moved on,” and has embraced a new chapter in the states.

Prince Joachim and Prince Harry, 40, have previously connected around Invictus, meeting in Copenhagen in 2017 during a visit with Danish Invictus Games participants during Harry’s official visit to Denmark then.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler, the Duke of Sussex said it was a joy to stage the tournament in Canada once more (following the 2017 Toronto cycle, where he and wife Meghan made their debut as a couple).

“It’s incredible to be back in Canada. Canada couldn’t be more appropriate to host the first Winter Games. Everyone is so excited,” Prince Harry tells PEOPLE.
