Donald Trump saw barely any racing at the Daytona 500 as he left early as a rain delay hit the biggest race on the NASCAR calendar.
Donald Trump left the Daytona 500 after seeing just 11 laps of racing as a rain delay hit NASCAR’s biggest race.
Trump was front and center for a grand introduction to ‘The Great American Race’. He made an extravagant arrival by performing a flyover in Air Force One above the grandstands.
After landing at the nearby Daytona Beach International Airport next to the track, he mixed with drivers on pit lane then performed pace laps in ‘The Beast’ before the green flag waved to get racing underway, sending a message to drivers on the radio in the process.
But drivers managed just nine flags before the yellow caution flag came out, and with only 11 laps of the 200-lap race completed, the red flag was deployed to stop the race and drivers returned to pit road.
After around an hour of the delay, Trump was filmed leaving in his motorcade and heading back to Air Force One, which was spotted beginning to taxi to the runway just after 3 p.m. E.T.
It is the second straight Daytona 500 he has attended as president which has been ruined by rain after the 2020 race had to be finished on Monday.
Last year’s race was also moved back to Monday before eventually being won by William Byron
Before the race, Trump told drivers over the radio: “This is your favorite President. I’m a big fan. I am a really big fan of you people.
“How you do this, I don’t know. But I just want you to be safe. You’re talented people, great people and great Americans. Have a good day, have a lot of fun and I’ll see you later.”
