Enjoying a visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, King Charles met a host of household names including Heung-Min Son and Bethany England, alongside receiving a crash course in the NFL
King Charles III struggled in his attempt at throwing a football but his effort was met with rapturous cheers from bystanders at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – before one attendee compared him to Beyoncé.
The British monarch attended the state-of-the-art new home of Premier League club Spurs to honor the club’s working in the surrounding community in North London. The 76-year-old was welcomed to the 63,000-capacity arena by Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy, before meeting various individuals during his trip around the ground.
During his visit, Charles was greeted by men’s and women’s team skippers Heung-Min Son and Bethany England, respectively. He discussed the recent ailing form of Ange Postecoglou’s side with South Korean superstar Son, with the Spurs captain explaining how the team has fared so far this season.
With the struggling side currently occupying a lowly 14th place in the Premier League, Charles asked: “How is the team doing at the moment?” to which Son then issued a positive spin on the team’s recent downturn in form, saying: “Difficult moments, but working hard.”
Following on from this, the king then was given a lesson in throwing a football, as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s NFL connection was honored. With the arena having hosted ten regular season games in the league during its short history, Efe Obada was on hand to give the monarch an impromptu crash course.
Charles eventual effort was not exactly up to professional standards but his throw still inspired loud cheers from the spectators gathered in the stadium. Reflecting on this unique brush with royalty, Efe later said of the king: “I loved his energy, the fact that he came in here willing to get stuck in.
His technique was immense. I wanted him to get a hoop, in the target, but he was just having a good time. We talked about the NFL and he’s a fan. He’s going to watch the games.”
Meanwhile, Gina Moffatt, who met the monarch during his visit to the stadium, also recounted her encounter with the king, even making him laugh with her witty remark. She recalled saying to Charles: “I’m so excited that you’re even back in Tottenham, this year’s looking all good, Tottenham Hotspur’s doing great stuff. We’ve got Beyonce coming but you’re bigger than Beyonce.”
Likewise, former Tottenham captain Ledley King reflected on a memorable day at Spurs’ stadium in his role as a club ambassador, adding: “It’s fantastic to have the King here. There is a lot of great work going on in the community and great to have him here at the stadium to see what goes on.
“It’s much more than a football stadium, it reaches out to the wider community. We spoke about the difference between the NFL and football and how there is quite a few stoppages and now that I’m older it’s a lot easier for me with many stoppages. It’s a pleasure to meet him.”
