The couple, who married in June 2015, are now a family of six

Princess Sofia of Sweden is now a mother of four — and after three sons, a girl mom!

The Swedish royal family announced Princess Sofia, 40, and Prince Carl Philip, 45, welcomed their fourth child on Feb. 7. After three sons — Prince Alexander, 8, Prince Gabriel, 7, and Prince Julian, 3 — the new baby is the couple’s first daughter.

“Today, Friday 7th February at 1.10 p.m., HRH Princess Sofia gave birth to a daughter at Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm,” the announcement on the royal family’s website said, sharing the baby weighed 8 lbs and measured 19 inches long.

“Prince Carl Philip was present at Danderyd Hospital throughout the birth,” the statement added.

Although a name wasn’t immediately revealed, the child will have a princess title. She will join the line of succession as eighth in line to the throne behind her brothers.

The couple announced Sofia’s pregnancy on Sept. 2, telling the public their fourth child was due in February.

A statement shared by the Swedish Royal Household read, “Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia are very happy to announce that the Princess is expecting the couple’s fourth child.”

The statement also said that Sofia “is doing well” and that the baby was expected in February 2025. The announcement was accompanied by a new photo of the couple in front of a picturesque lake.

Prince Carl Philip is fourth in line to the Swedish throne, the only son and second child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. In 2019, the palace announced that the children of Prince Carl Philip, as well as the children of Carl Philip’s younger sister Princess Madeleine, would no longer hold HRH titles. Carl Philip’s older sister, Crown Princess Victoria, is heir to the Swedish throne, and her children, therefore, have royal titles.

Though Prince Julian was not born at the time, the change affected his older brothers Prince Alexander and Prince Gabriel. When Prince Julian was born, he was the first of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s grandchildren to be born without the HRH title.

Prince Carl Philip said he saw the decision as “positive” for his children, adding that it would allow his children to “have freer choices in life.”

“They will retain their prince titles and their duchies, Södermanland and Dalarna, which we value and are proud of,” he added. “Our family has strong connections to both landscapes and we maintain our commitment there.”

While Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia’s children retained their prince titles, the styling became personal, and any future spouses or children will not have a right to them. They will also not be expected to perform official royal duties one day.

Carl Philip and Sofia married in June 2015, and Sofia became a princess upon her marriage. The couple are both working royals — and now, additionally, a family of six.
