Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joined the rest of the Royal Family to mark Remembrance Day in 2018, but it was the Duchess of Sussex who made the front page of the papers

Meghan Markle felt terrible when she realised she had upstaged the late Queen Elizabeth II during an outing with the Royal Family and gave a shocked three-word response.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex opened up about their time in The Firm in their bombshell Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan. In the show, the couple recalled joining the other members of the Royal Family to mark Remembrance Day in 2018. Harry said that event, as well as their visit to Australia earlier that year, started a domino effect which led to his and Meghan’s fallout with the Royal Family. He explained: “The issue is when someone who’s marrying in, who should be a supporting act, is then stealing the limelight, or is doing the job better than the person who is born to do this.”

The Duke of Sussex said Meghan shifted the balance when she joined the Royal Family and admitted: “That upsets people.” Harry explained: “You’ve been led to believe that the only way that your charities can succeed and the only way that your reputation can be grown or improved is if you’re on the front page of those newspapers.”

Reflecting on the 2018 Remembrance Day, Harry said “the penny dropped” for Meghan when she saw herself on the front cover of a newspaper. He said: “M and I spent the night in a room in Buckingham Palace after an event where every single member of the family had been, including the Queen.” Meghan explained how they went for breakfast the next morning. There, she saw herself on the front page of The Sunday Telegraph.

Speaking on the show, Meghan said: “I went, ‘Oh my God’.” Harry then recalled Meghan’s reaction and added: “She was like, ‘But it’s not my fault’.” The Sussexes stepped down from the Royal Family in 2020. In a statement released at the time, they said: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.

We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.” The couple then moved to Montecito, California. Since then, they’ve worked to make a name for themselves in Hollywood. They signed an exclusive deal with Netflix and secured a publishing deal with Penguin Random House. They also worked with Spotify, but their partnership was axed earlier this year.
