JUST IN:Why Jennifer Lopez says Ben Affleck divorce is the ‘best thing that ever happened’ to her
Jennifer Lopez is reflecting on her past relationships. On October 15, the Kiss of the Spider Woman actress appeared on an episode of SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show and talked about all things love. Stern asked her, “Do you think you’ve truly been loved?” After a long pause, Lopez replied, “No.”
When asked about the “heartbreak” she felt from not receiving love in return, she said, “What I learned [is that] it’s not that I’m not lovable. It’s that they’re not capable. They don’t have it in them. They need to appreciate the little person inside of them. They need to love them.”
“And they gave me what they had,” she continued. “They gave me all of it. Every time. All the rings, all the things I could ever want. They tried to give me the houses, the rings, the marriage, all of it. But they didn’t [love me]. And I didn’t love myself.”
Lopez then reflected on her relationship with Ben Affleck, whom she married in 2022. Their divorce was finalized in 2025 after she filed in August 2024.
“When I got divorced this last time, it was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she revealed. “It really made me journey into…I mean, I had a religious coach, a therapist, a couple’s therapist, an individual therapist. I had a coach to understand addiction. I had everything. I was like, ‘I’m gonna figure this shit out if it kills me.’’’
She added that those moments of self-reflection have made her a better person in the long run.
“It really got to the point where I go, ‘Oh, the core of the thing is you. It’s nobody else.’ And when I did that, now I’m able to sit here in a more self-assured, self-aware way. The things that have happened to me…whether [it’s about] my mother, my father…how I learned to love, how I felt neglected—all the things that are in your head as a person. I know who I am, and I just really appreciate that person and feel really comfortable and good in being myself—all the good parts and all of the complicated things.”
