Whoopi Goldberg is clear with her romantic expectations and thinks others attempting to dip their toes into the dating pool should be, too.

The EGOT-winner, who has publicly stated that she’s not interested in getting married again, emphasized the importance of truly getting to know what you want out of a relationship — or, in her case, a casual hookup — before deciding to strike up a connection.

Goldberg has been married three times in her life. She was first married to Alvin Martin, with whom she shares daughter Alex, from 1973 until 1979, before later tying the knot with Dutch director David Claessen from 1986 until 1988. She also married actor Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994, but their relationship came to an end the following year.

The Ghost actress’ hookup remarks were part of a larger conversation at Tuesday’s Hot Topics table about a recent Atlantic article that claimed many men and women have given up on finding love in recent years. During their chat, Goldberg noted that one of the reasons she believes things haven’t worked out is that “people don’t know how to meet each other” anymore.

They don’t know how to go out and just have a good time — forget how much money you’re making, we’re here at the bar,” Goldberg said. “Let’s eat some chips, let’s eat one of these nasty potatoes, and see what’s going on.”

Her Republican cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin, who tied the knot with husband Justin Griffin in 2021, agreed that it was vital to put yourself out there in order to find a special someone. “What’s meant for you will come to you, but you also have to show up,” she pointed out. “You can’t just sit at home and wait for someone to kidnap you.”

Joy Behar, who married teacher Steve Janowitz in 2011 after famously meeting him in a nudist colony, reiterated an important piece of advice that she received from her therapist: just find someone who is easy to get along with.

“That sounds boring, but it’s not,” she added. “Because, at the end of the years, as they go by, and mine have gone by many years like yours, you end up being friends. Can you be friends with this person?”

Goldberg concluded, “If you’re looking for somebody, take the time to actually do it. Take the time to look. And I suspect you’ll find somebody who rings your bell. I believe that.”
