DONALD Trump and Vladimir Putin have ended a 90-minute marathon phonecall that could finally seal a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The US and Russian presidents were reported to begin the high-stakes conversation at 11am Washington time (3pm UK time) and finished around 12.30pm (4.30pm UK time).

The call was due to start an hour earlier but was delayed after Putin was talking to a group of oligarchs in Moscow.

The high-stakes conversation was their first since Ukraine agreed to support a US-led ceasefire proposal.

The call was expected to last around two hours – but the Kremlin said it will last as long as needed to thrash out a possible deal.

An aid to Putin has claimed the world has become a much “safer place” today under the leadership of Trump to the Russian tyrant.

Ukraine’s hero war leader Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Putin is seeking to “drag out” the war.

He said earlier today: “For a week now, Putin has been unable to squeeze out ‘yes’ to the ceasefire proposal.”

The US president believes he has a “very good chance” of finally convincing Putin to accept a ceasefire – with Ukraine again left out of crunch talks over their future.

However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters yesterday that Trump is willing to hit Russia with further sanctions if the scheduled call does not end well.

She said: “It is something the president has floated, and certainly he’s willing to do if necessary.

“We are on the 10th-yard line of peace and we’ve never been closer to a peace deal than we are in this moment.

“The president is determined to get one done.”

Putin has still given no clear indication if he is willing to accept a truce deal and has instead raised “serious questions” over the proposal.

Trump wrote last night: “Tomorrow morning I will be speaking to President Putin concerning the War in Ukraine.

“Many elements of a Final Agreement have been agreed to, but much remains.

“Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW.

“I look very much forward to the call with President Putin.”

The White House has outlined that Trump plans to talk about “land,” “power plants,” and “dividing up certain assets.”
